Here's why Microcurrent is one of the best things you can do for your face

Have you ever looked in the mirror one day and noticed that your face appeared more dull, droopy, or sunken than you remembered? This happened to me about a year ago when I felt like I woke up one day and my face just looked like… not how I remembered it. I’m still in my late 20s so aging isn’t a huge concern for me yet, but I certainly do not look how I did when I was in college. Especially after the unexpected and traumatic loss of my partner in 2022 then my dad in 2023, I feel like my face put on about 5 years within the span of 1 year.

Starting in our mid to late 20s, we begin to lose around 1% of our collagen per year. Our collagen fibers are what provide volume, structure, and support to our skin which is why it’s the key to maintaining a healthy and youthful appearance. Loss in collagen = pronounced appearance of pores, wrinkles, and sagging.

Thanks to modern technology, we now have the tools to not only slow down the skin’s aging process, but also reverse the appearance of it. Microcurrent is one of my favorite tools to do so.

So, what is microcurrent?

Microcurrent utilizes a very low level of electrical current to stimulate the Golgi Tendon Organ (GTO). The GTO controls the length and tone of the muscle - by stimulating it, it re-educates the facial muscles to correct elongation caused by age and gravity.

Oftentimes the appearance of aging is not necessarily because of our skin. It can be due to our fat pads shifting and/or a loss of our muscle tone. Our face will also begin to droop over time due to gravity. This is why microcurrent is so effective - it doesn’t just stimulate collagen and elastin production, it tones the muscles that lie underneath.

In addition to re-educating the facial muscles, microcurrent also

  1. Stimulates collagen and elastin production due to an increase in ATP (the energy cells need) making the skin appear more plump and juicy

  2. Moves blood and lymph, aiding in oxygenation and detoxification

  3. Breaks up scar tissue, making it especially great for those with acne scars

  4. Refines skin texture, reducing the appearance of pores

  5. Reduces puffiness and dark circles under the eyes

  6. Reduces the appearance of jowls and marionette lines

  7. Aids in the absorption of skincare products

There are so many benefits to microcurrent and it is effective BUT only if it is done consistently over time. I offer microcurrent facials which I recommend to anyone concerned about aging or just wanting to keep their skin in the best shape possible. However, facials can be expensive and time-consuming. It is recommended to do 2-3 microcurrent facials per week for anywhere between 4-10 weeks depending on the skin’s condition, then once every 3-4 weeks for maintenance.

If facials are not possible for you, you can utilize an at-home device such as the Clareblend Mini. I have tried several at-home devices and this one is my favorite. Unlike many other microcurrent devices, the Mini is easy to use, lightweight, doesn’t cause uncomfortable stinging or zapping, and most importantly is effective.

This is also a great tool to boost your results if you are already getting professional microcurrent treatments. Using it for 5-10 minutes several times a week is enough to see results over time. You can easily use it while watching your favorite TV show.

True microcurrent should be sub-sensory, meaning you shouldn’t be able to feel it at all. It is painless, there’s no downtime, and is a great option for those wanting to take a more natural route. It is not recommended for those who are pregnant, epileptic, have cancer, or have implanted electrical devices such as a pacemaker.

But remember, microcurrent only works if you are consistent. Don’t expect to see results overnight or even after a week. I started to notice a difference in my own skin after around two weeks of daily use.
